Preparing for Our Lab Tests in New Jersey and Nationwide

Blood Test Vials

Lab tests from TOPLAB® may require special preparation beforehand. Following specific instructions helps ensure the results reflect an accurate portrayal of a patient’s health. TOPLAB® offers direct-to-consumer blood testing and other laboratory services to numerous clients throughout New Jersey and the United States. Our general testing guide helps ensure patients are ready for their blood work.

What to Bring to Your Lab Test

You should always bring a photo ID, your current insurance identification card, and a credit or debit card to a lab test. These items are essentials for any healthcare visit. Additionally, bring a list of the medications, vitamins, and supplements you take. This information will help us determine the best direction to follow with your blood work. As many tests require fasting, you should also bring a snack and drink to eat once the procedure is over.

General Preparations for Lab Testing

While every test requires unique preparation, there are several actions you can take to make your lab experience go smoother. Consider taking the following steps before getting your blood work done to ensure optimal results:

  • Drink plenty of water to keep your blood pressure from lowering and prevent fainting during the test.
  • Abstain from overeating and consuming certain foods and drinks, like alcohol and cooked meats.
  • Refrain from smoking.
  • Avoid overly demanding activities.

Additionally, tell your TOPLAB® lab technician if you take a blood-thinning medication before the test. We will ensure clotting begins before you leave our facility.

Fasting for Blood Work

Most blood tests require some form of fasting. Generally, you must refrain from eating or drinking for at least 8 hours before the test. You may consume certain liquids after midnight, like water, black tea, and black coffee. However, you may be instructed to avoid adding cream, sugar, or milk to these drinks as they may affect your results. Additionally, continue to take any prescribed medication unless your lab instructions say otherwise.

Fasting is usually required for the following blood tests:

  • Alpha-2 Macroglobulin
  • Calcitonin
  • Carotene
  • Cholesterol
  • Coenzyme Q10
  • Collagen Type 1C-Telopeptide
  • Glucose testing
  • Lactose
  • Lipid
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin K

If you do not need to fast before your blood test, you should eat a meal to keep your blood sugar at an acceptable level and avoid feeling lightheaded.

What to Expect During Your Blood Test

When your TOPLAB® lab technician is ready to administer your test, they will gently press your skin to find the best vein to pierce. They may also ask you to make a fist to help your veins stand out. After locating this vein, the technician will put on gloves and disinfect the area. Then, they will tie a tourniquet around your upper arm to stimulate blood flow to the site.

Once the technician inserts the needle and draws your blood, they will remove the needle and place a piece of gauze against the punctured area. Next, they will ask you to add pressure to the bandage with your finger. Patients typically may remove the gauze approximately an hour after having blood work done.

Most importantly, our goal is that patients feel calm during the test. Do not hesitate to ask your TOPLAB® technician any questions before, during, or after blood work to ensure you feel confident about the procedure.
